In Kennel Enrichment Thursday
In-kennel enrichment activities work with dogs in all seven pavilions at CACC, thus giving dogs who don’t get out of their cages at all the chance to interact with humans and to reduce stress. Enrichment activities include rewarding polite kennel behavior, demonstrating good manners as adopters/visitors walk by, engaging in mental stimulation with toys or commands, and reading/talking/singing to our dogs. The impact on long-stay dogs who are unable to be handled by volunteers [dogs held in bite investigations or “caution dogs,” for instance] is significant, including an improved ability to connect and interact with humans in a positive way. It prevents mental and physical deterioration of the dogs while at the shelter. You do not need to be an approved volunteer for Monday night Enrichment—you just need to sign liability waivers to participate with trained, approved volunteers. For Thursday Enrichment, please check with the lead.
*Note: When working in upper-respiratory-illness-exposed pavilions ("ISO," short for "isolation" pavilions), please be sure to bring a change of clothes to minimize risk of spreading illness to your pups at home.
