New Volunteer in Process

What We Do

So what's next? What is the process? Here is a quick outline:

1) Fingerprints
2) Shadow
3) Fingerprint Clearance
    ● For Dogs : Need Dog Handling 101, and two individual 1 on 1 training sessions
    ● For Cats  : Need Cat Room Training
4) Active Volunteer - good to walk dogs and/or  good to work in cat room

So let's talk about these steps.

Please remember to go to the Galaxy website address that you were given to complete the five registration steps prior to fingerprinting. You can use the website address that you were given at the orientation: volunteer.chicagoanimals.org.

1) Fingerprints:  As you know, the next step is to be fingerprinted. At the end of today's session, you received a "J-number" with instructions for being fingerprinted at City Hall. Your "J-Number" will be good for about 90 days, so please make the trip to City Hall for fingerprinting as soon as you can. You can fill out the fingerprinting paperwork and take it with you, except for the signatures.  You will need to sign in front of the fingerprinting staff. Once you have been fingerprinted, you will receive an e-mail within about a week or two. That e-mail will include information and instructions about the SHADOW Volunteer process, a way for you to be interactive and be able to participate helping the animals at CACC while we wait for your fingerprints to be cleared. This fingerprint clearance process can take up to 4-8 weeks.

2) Shadow: Shortly after having your fingerprints taken you will receive an email outlining the Shadow Volunteer process. It will describe in detail what your next steps are and how you can start to be interactive and able to participate helping the animals at CACC while we await your fingerprints to be cleared.

3) Fingerprint Clearance: Once we receive notification that your fingerprints have been cleared you will then receive an email letting you know when the next Dog Handling 101 sessions are scheduled. This is the first step in the dog walking training process. Once Dog Handling 101 is complete you will be required to complete 2 individual 1 on 1 dog handling training sessions. For those interested in Cat volunteering, this is when you can schedule a 1 on 1 training session with a cat room volunteer.

4) Active Volunteer: When Dog Handling 101 and both individual 1 on 1 dog handling training sessions are complete you will be all good to start walking dogs on your own. For cat volunteers, you will become active after your individual cat room training session.

After receiving confirmation that your fingerprints are being processed you will receive an email containing your number that will allow you to sign in on the kiosk next to the security desk as well as a temporary password for the on-line volunteer software system so you can schedule your training online.

If you are interested in working with the court case dogs, there is additional training available once you have begun volunteering.  This specialized training will allow you to work with the animals in the Safe Humane Chicago program and in pavilions other than Pavilion A and B.

There are a few other ways, in addition to shadowing, that you can begin to help before you get fingerprinted:
    ● Customer service at special events - watch your e-mail for these opportunities
    ● Friends of CACC is looking for a dedicated volunteer to coordinate our satellite adoption facility at the PetCo at 440 N. Orleans. Please contact me directly if you are interested. This opportunity does require a commitment of several hours per week.
    ● Kitten Bottle Feeding Workshops - The next workshop will be listed on the CACC Facebook page:
